Lagos to Upgrade 27 Primary Healthcare Centres Within Four Months

...As State Government Launches IMPACT Project to Improve Grassroots Health Access

The Lagos State Government has commenced the upgrade of 27 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state under the IMPACT Project, with completion expected within the next three to four months.

The initiative was formally flagged off at a handing-over ceremony held at Palm Avenue PHC, Mushin. Speaking at the event, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, said the project is being carried out in collaboration with the World Bank and other stakeholders.

He urged residents and Community Development Associations (CDAs) to support the contractors and take ownership of the project to ensure its success and sustainability.

“We are appealing to all community stakeholders to provide the necessary support to ensure timely execution and protection of these healthcare facilities,” he said. “This upgrade will boost the capacity of health workers, reduce infant and maternal mortality rates, and significantly improve public health outcomes.”

Dr. Olufunmilayo Bankole, Permanent Secretary of Health District 1, described the upgrade as a significant step towards enhancing healthcare delivery at the grassroots. She emphasized that the initiative would improve both the infrastructure and the working environment for healthcare providers, ultimately increasing patient access and satisfaction.

Dr. Dayo Lajide, Permanent Secretary of Health District 2, echoed the same sentiment, stating that the upgrade aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive to transform PHCs into more accessible and efficient healthcare centres. She noted that substantial investments are being directed towards strengthening the state’s primary healthcare infrastructure.

“This project is part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader vision to create a robust, accessible healthcare system that meets the needs of all Lagos residents,” she said.

Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, Hon. Emmanuel Bamigboye, described the initiative as a landmark achievement in the state’s commitment to public health. He lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu for his dynamic leadership and dedication to providing quality healthcare and social infrastructure across Lagos.

“Healthcare is a fundamental right, and this project reinforces our collective commitment to ensuring that every citizen, regardless of status or location, can access quality medical services,” he said.

Bamigboye also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve local healthcare services, including the provision of free ambulance services, laboratory upgrades in PHCs, and donations of medical equipment to the General Hospital, Mushin.

He urged residents to safeguard and make good use of the improved PHCs, stressing that community participation is vital to sustaining government investments in healthcare.

The ceremony drew the presence of several key stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretaries of Health Districts 5 and 6, Dr. Dapo Asiyanbi and Dr. Cecilia Mabogunje, as well as contractors, health officials, and community leaders. All reaffirmed their support for the Lagos State Government’s commitment to quality healthcare delivery through the IMPACT Project.
