LASG Reaffirms Legality of Speed Limits, Urges Compliance

The Lagos State Government has reiterated the legality of speed limit regulations and called on motorists to adhere to the prescribed limits for the safety of all road users. This clarification comes amid public concerns over the enforcement of speed limits on selected roads.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, cited Section 28(2)(a) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018) as the legal framework supporting penalties for motorists who exceed designated speed limits.

Addressing the standardization of traffic signs, Osiyemi emphasized that the Ministry of Transportation is solely responsible for determining the size, color, and type of traffic signs across the state, ensuring alignment with global best practices.

He also dispelled misinformation regarding the speed limit enforcement initiative, noting that speed cameras were installed after comprehensive studies identified a need in specific areas. Currently, these cameras are operational on Alapere Road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way. He added that further reviews would determine additional locations for implementation.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to road safety, Osiyemi stressed that the primary objective of the speed limit cameras is to protect both commuters and motorists, reducing accidents caused by excessive speeding.
