Nigeria Marks Inaugural National Police Day with Grand Ceremony in Abuja

The Nigerian government celebrated the maiden edition of National Police Day on April 7, 2025, with a grand ceremony at Eagle Square, Abuja — honoring the vital contributions of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to national security and public safety.

The celebration featured a vibrant parade and demonstration of operational capacity by police units, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad, Police Mobile Force (PMF), Special Protection Unit (SPU), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), K9 teams, and Peacekeeping contingents. High-tech equipment, such as EOD robots and air-land tactical response units, were also on display — a showcase of the evolving capacity of the Force.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, in his address, described the National Police Day as a pivotal moment to reaffirm the Force’s dedication to professionalism, public trust, and community partnership. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for officially designating April 7 as National Police Day, and pledged continued reforms to enhance policing outcomes across the country.

“This day marks not just a celebration but a renewed promise to uphold the rule of law, fight crime, and secure every Nigerian,” Egbetokun stated.

Representing President Tinubu at the event, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, underscored the administration’s unwavering support for the Nigeria Police. He highlighted plans to boost police welfare, modernize equipment, and integrate advanced technology into policing.

“The sacrifices of our police officers do not go unnoticed. This government remains committed to supporting them with the tools and care they deserve,” the President said through the Vice President’s speech.

The historic event drew top dignitaries including members of the Federal Executive Council, National Assembly, State Governors, Service Chiefs, retired senior police officers, captains of industry, and representatives from civil society.

The Force, through its spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, extended heartfelt appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the celebration. He reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to deepening public engagement and strengthening operational effectiveness to ensure a safer Nigeria.
