In a landmark move aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s public procurement landscape, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has launched the Nigeria Procurement Certification Portal. The official unveiling took place on Tuesday at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre in Kado Kuchi, Abuja, signaling a bold stride towards institutional reform and capacity building in procurement practice nationwide.

The event was presided over by the Director-General of the BPP, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, MCIPS, ACFE, who described the launch as a strategic milestone in the country’s journey toward an efficient and globally competitive procurement system.

“Today marks the beginning of consolidating all our past efforts to build a more efficient and effective procurement regime in Nigeria,” Dr. Adedokun declared. “This portal will serve as a central hub for training, certifying, and equipping procurement professionals with the tools and expertise needed to support national development.”

Dr. Adedokun emphasized the urgent need for reform in Nigeria’s procurement processes, noting that the system had remained largely unchanged for over two decades despite the rapid evolution of global procurement practices driven by technology and innovation.

“As other nations modernize their procurement systems, Nigeria must also move away from outdated, one-size-fits-all approaches,” he said. “We are aligning our reforms with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure, transparency, and efficient service delivery.”

Referencing the Public Procurement Act of 2007, the DG reaffirmed the BPP’s statutory mandate to establish standards, develop legal frameworks, and monitor procurement practices across the federation. He announced that the new certification portal is set to train and certify over 7,000 procurement officers nationwide, including graduates from six Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and professionals from other African countries.

“This is a national effort,” Dr. Adedokun noted. “We are working with states and local governments to ensure that this initiative reaches every tier of governance and has a transformative impact across the country.”

The Nigeria Procurement Certification Portal is designed to offer structured training programmes, sector-specific modules, and partnerships with local and international professional bodies. It aims to enhance efficiency, reduce procurement cycle time, minimize financial wastage, and promote employment through capacity development.

The DG further revealed that the initiative is aligned with Affirmative Procurement strategies, promoting inclusivity by incorporating women and youth-focused programmes. He expressed optimism that the certification model would attract interest from other developing nations, potentially earning Nigeria foreign exchange through knowledge export.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Adedokun thanked key stakeholders, development partners, and the Nigerian public for their support and trust. “We are committed to delivering value for every Nigerian. This is a promise we intend to keep,” he said.
