Glo Foundation Hosts Rest and Relaxation Day for Over 1,000 LAWMA Sanitation Workers

…Promises Four-Week Skill Acquisition Programme to Equip Workers and Dependents

LAGOS, Nigeria — In a bid to enhance the well-being and future prospects of sanitation workers, Glo Foundation treated more than 1,000 staff of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to a “Rest and Relaxation Day” at the LAWMA headquarters in Ijora, Olopa, on Friday.

The event—which included music, games, dance competitions, a raffle draw, and a gift presentation—offered a welcome break from the rigors of street-sweeping duties. Two lucky sweepers walked away with a microwave oven and a grinding machine, prizes that underscored the Foundation’s commitment to celebrating these often-overlooked public servants.

Health, Wellness and the THEMES+ Agenda
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, praised the initiative for aligning with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus development agenda, particularly its emphasis on health and wellness. “Working round the clock leaves little time for intentional rest,” he noted. “This event shields our workers from stress and related health risks, while also boosting morale.”

Dr. Gbadegesin also welcomed the Foundation’s planned four-week skill acquisition training for 200 workers or their dependents, covering bead making, barbing, fashion design, digital skills and more. “When you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. That is exactly what Glo Foundation aims to achieve,” he added.

Celebrating “Our Real Heroes”
Mrs. Jumobi Mofe-Damijo, Head of CSR at Globacom Foundation, described the sanitation workers as “our mummies and daddies—our real heroes.” In anticipation of Mother’s Day on May 11, she said, “Today is extra special. We appreciate your tireless efforts in keeping Lagos clean and vibrant.” She reaffirmed that details of the upcoming vocational trainings would be communicated soon.

Voices from the Frontline
Sanitation workers in attendance expressed heartfelt gratitude. “It’s been a while since I’ve had this much fun,” said Iyabo Joseph. “I’m truly grateful to LAWMA and Glo Foundation.” Likewise, Lateefat Alabi remarked, “This event will motivate me to keep doing my job diligently.”

Community and Corporate Partnership
The festivities drew not only the workers but also LAWMA management, Glo Foundation officials, and traditional leaders, including Prince Adekemi Ojora, the Bobakeye of Ijora, Iganmu & Apapa kingdom. Their participation reinforced the message that every member of society—regardless of uniform color—deserves recognition and support.
