IGP Egbetokun Presents Insurance Cheques to Families of Fallen Police Officers

Reaffirms Commitment to Honouring Their Legacies

ABUJA — In a heartfelt ceremony held on Thursday, May 23, 2025, at the IGP Smart Conference Hall, Louis Edet House, Force Headquarters, Abuja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, presented insurance cheques to the next of kin of 1,235 police officers who died in active service.

The cheques, under the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the IGP Family Welfare Insurance Scheme, represent the 10th phase of disbursements made under the current police administration. The event, which underscored the Force’s dedication to the welfare of its personnel and their families, was attended by senior police officers, members of the Force Management Team, insurance stakeholders, and beneficiaries.

In his address, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s foundation of service, integrity, and sacrifice. He reaffirmed the Force’s unwavering commitment to supporting the families of fallen heroes, noting that while no monetary compensation can replace a lost life, these gestures serve to honour their sacrifices.

The IGP revealed that since the commencement of the disbursement initiative, a total of N22.97 billion has been paid to 8,311 families across ten phases. Specifically, the 10th phase saw the release of N2.86 billion to 1,235 beneficiaries. These payments cover outstanding death benefits from insurance policies dating back to 2018/2019, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024.

“The Nigeria Police Force will continue to institutionalise welfare programs that ensure no family of a fallen officer is left in uncertainty,” Egbetokun stated, expressing deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support of police welfare initiatives.

The IGP also reassured serving and retired officers of his administration’s dedication to improving their overall welfare, pledging to sustain efforts that provide meaningful support to all members of the Force, both past and present.
