Lagos Backs Youth Innovation as Pelumi Nubi Marks Road Trip Anniversary with Memoir, Travel Show

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment, tourism promotion, and cultural development as travel content creator Pelumi Nubi celebrated the one-year anniversary of her historic London-to-Lagos solo road trip.

The milestone event, held in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, featured the launch of Nubi’s memoir detailing her 68-day journey through Europe and West Africa, as well as the premiere of her new travel docuseries, One Week In, which explores the cultural richness of all 54 African countries.

Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, hailed the achievement as a testament to the creative spirit of Lagos youth and the supportive policies of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

“This celebration goes beyond Pelumi’s journey,” Aregbe said. “It’s about the power of dreams, cultural pride, and innovation. Under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, Lagos has become a nurturing ground for youth development and creativity.”

The day’s activities began with a guided tour of Iwalewa Art Gallery and continued with a cultural immersion experience at the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, where the main event was held.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olanrewaju Bajulaiye, praised Nubi’s courage and her contribution to reshaping Nigeria’s image globally.

“Pelumi Nubi is more than a traveler; she’s a symbol of Nigerian resilience and creativity,” he said. “Her journey challenges stereotypes and positions Nigeria as a country of bold, innovative youth ready to shape global narratives.”

Bajulaiye noted that Nubi’s efforts align with the state’s strategic goals of promoting authentic Nigerian stories and boosting diaspora engagement.

In an emotional speech, Nubi thanked the Lagos State Government for its overwhelming support and said the reception she received upon completing her journey confirmed Lagos as “a true hub of excellence and creativity.”

“Through this journey, I’ve grown so much,” Nubi shared. “I want to change the narrative of Africa, to show the hidden gems and untold stories that deserve global attention.”

She also encouraged young people to embrace bold goals despite criticism. “If no one has called you crazy this year, you’re playing life too safe,” she said.

With plans to visit 100 countries and further grow her digital travel platform, Nubi said she remains committed to putting Africa—and especially Lagos—on the global tourism map.
