Soludo Prioritizes Maternal Health as Anambra Rolls Out Free Antenatal and Delivery Services

In a significant boost to maternal healthcare in Anambra State, Governor Charles Soludo has approved a major contract for the supply of essential antenatal medicines and related services, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to providing free antenatal and delivery care to pregnant women across the state.

The initiative, designed to cover the first half of 2025, forms part of the state government’s broader healthcare reform agenda aimed at reducing maternal mortality and improving access to quality healthcare for expectant mothers.

Governor Soludo has made healthcare a cornerstone of his administration’s infrastructural transformation, upgrading existing primary healthcare centers and establishing five new general hospitals equipped with modern medical facilities and qualified personnel.

To support this rapid development, the state has recruited over 1,000 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, consultants, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians. The government has also introduced telemedicine platforms to expand access to healthcare in remote areas.

Speaking on the developments, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed that the state government recently delivered four ambulances to the Ministry of Health to further strengthen emergency response capacity.

In addition, the Soludo administration has awarded contracts for further construction works at the ultra-modern trauma center currently under development at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka. The governor also approved the reconstruction and reinforcement of the collapsed perimeter fence and drainage system at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Nawfia.

Governor Soludo’s strides in the health sector have not gone unnoticed. At the ninth meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), he was celebrated as the most outstanding governor in primary healthcare delivery in the Southeast and ranked top nationally.

The state’s impressive healthcare performance was further validated in BudgIT’s 2024 State of States report, where Anambra clinched the fourth position nationwide in fiscal performance and sustainability.

With these initiatives, Governor Soludo continues to demonstrate a clear vision for a robust, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of all residents, particularly the most vulnerable.
