Two Injured in Iyana-Oworo Auto Crash as LASTMA Renews Call for Speed Regulation Compliance

Lagos, May 27, 2025 — The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a severe road traffic accident involving a white commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a private vehicle at Iyana-Oworo, near Olopomeji inward Car Wash, leaving two passengers seriously injured.

According to reports from LASTMA, the crash occurred when the commercial bus, identified by registration number LSR 701 EF, suffered a sudden brake failure while allegedly travelling at excessive speed and in an overloaded state. The loss of control resulted in a violent collision with a private car ahead, causing extensive damage and injuries to passengers in the bus.

Among the injured were a woman with fractured legs and a young girl who sustained multiple injuries. LASTMA officials on ground immediately provided first aid and coordinated with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which swiftly transported the victims to a nearby hospital for emergency medical care.

Security support was provided by officers from the Alonge Police Division, who secured the crash scene and assisted with crowd control. LASTMA operatives cleared the wreckage and towed the affected vehicles to ease the resulting traffic congestion and restore normal traffic flow.

In a statement following the incident, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, condemned the reckless driving behavior increasingly exhibited by commercial bus operators across the state.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the consequences of non-compliance with traffic safety laws. Over-speeding and overloading continue to threaten lives on our roads,” he said.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also reiterated the importance of mandatory speed-limiting devices installed in commercial vehicles as part of the Lagos State Government’s safety regulations, stressing that the accident might have been prevented if proper speed control had been observed.

“We must all understand that road safety is a shared responsibility. These regulations are in place to prevent tragedies such as this,” he added.

He extended his sympathy to the injured passengers and wished them a swift recovery, assuring the public of LASTMA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring safety and orderliness on all Lagos roads.
