First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Advocates Legislative Support for Office of the First Lady, Highlights RHI Achievements

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on the National Assembly to provide legislative support for the Office of the First Lady at both the federal and state levels, similar to the framework in place in the United States. She noted that such backing would significantly enhance the office’s ability to positively impact more lives across the country.
Speaking to journalists after the Second Quarterly Meeting with the Wives of State Governors and State Coordinators of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Senator Tinubu emphasized the vital role of First Ladies in national development.
“We are wives, and we want to see our husbands succeed. They are like trees on which we, as branches, perch. We want to support them in every way we can,” she said.
Highlighting the achievements of the RHI in the past two years, the First Lady revealed that the initiative has provided scholarships worth ₦1 million each to 47 indigent students. However, she stressed that limited funding remains a challenge.
“We could have done more if we had more resources,” she stated. “On our part, we are doing what we can with what we have. We are helping the less privileged, one person at a time.”
She described Nigeria as a blessed nation rich in resources and called for concerted efforts to harness its full potential. “I just want to see what I can do to make society better,” she added.
Senator Tinubu also addressed the recent spate of violence in parts of the country, including Borno and Plateau States. She condemned the attacks as “evil and unfortunate” and called for intensified prayers for national peace and security.
“These killings are not new, but why are they resurfacing now when the nation is getting better and people are beginning to reckon with us?” she queried. “We must pray more. Whatever we can do for Nigeria, we must do it.”
During the meeting, the First Lady commended the wives of state governors for their ongoing support and complementary roles. She urged them to intensify advocacy efforts around key public health concerns, including HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Syphilis, Tuberculosis, and Cervical Cancer.
She also announced the upcoming launch of the “Flow With Confidence” initiative, aimed at supporting adolescent girls in rural communities. Each state, she said, will receive 10,000 cartons of sanitary pads for distribution.
Additionally, the RHI Environment Club/Society is expected to be launched in the coming weeks, as part of the First Lady’s broader commitment to youth engagement and environmental awareness.
The meeting was attended by the wife of the Vice President, the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the wife of the Deputy Senate President, and 24 wives of state governors.
