First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Calls for Collective Action Against Drug Abuse and Organized Crime

Abuja, Nigeria – June 26, 2025 — As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has urged leaders, parents, teachers, and communities to take decisive action in protecting the nation’s youth from the dangers of drug abuse and organized crime.

In a statement released to commemorate the global observance, which holds annually on June 26, the First Lady emphasized the urgent need to invest in preventive measures. She echoed this year’s theme, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime,” stating that prevention is a life-saving strategy that safeguards the nation’s future.

“The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking calls on all of us—as leaders, parents, teachers, and communities—to reaffirm our commitment to protecting the health and future of our people, especially our youth, from the menace of drug abuse,” she said.

Senator Tinubu highlighted the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for every Nigerian child, stressing that they deserve to grow up free from the grip of drug addiction and the threats posed by criminal networks.

She further urged for positive youth engagement, stronger family support systems, and sustained public awareness campaigns, noting that these are crucial steps toward building a healthier, safer, and more resilient nation.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations observance aimed at strengthening action and cooperation in achieving a drug-free society.
