Soludo Administration to Build Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre in Anambra

AWKA, NIGERIA — In a significant move to strengthen mental healthcare delivery in Anambra State, the administration of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has approved the construction of a rehabilitation centre in Nibo, Awka.

The decision was announced following the 12th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), held at the newly commissioned Government House, known as the Light House.

According to the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the rehabilitation facility is designed to offer comprehensive mental health services, enabling patients discharged from asylums to receive continued care before reintegrating into their families and communities.

“This initiative is part of Governor Soludo’s commitment to holistic healthcare delivery for Ndi Anambra, which includes mental wellness,” Dr. Mefor stated.

In line with his administration's free healthcare policy for pregnant women, Governor Soludo has also approved the procurement of antenatal medicines and essential services to support free antenatal and delivery care across the state from January to June 2025.

The governor's focus on healthcare has earned him national recognition, including being named the Most Performing Governor in Primary Healthcare in the Southeast and across Nigeria at the ninth ANSEC meeting.

Further demonstrating his dedication to mental health, Soludo has awarded a contract for the reconstruction and fortification of collapsed sections of the perimeter fence and drainage systems at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Nawfia, ensuring better security and functionality of the facility.

Governor Soludo's administration has already made sweeping reforms in the health sector. These include the upgrade of numerous primary healthcare centres, the construction of five new general hospitals, and the provision of state-of-the-art medical equipment and qualified personnel.

To support these improvements, the government recently employed 1,000 new health workers, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, consultants, and lab technicians. It also launched telemedicine initiatives to improve access to healthcare in remote areas.

The forthcoming rehabilitation centre at Nibo represents a bold step in addressing the often-overlooked area of mental health, further positioning Anambra State as a model for inclusive and innovative healthcare governance in Nigeria.
