AIG Fayoade Warns Officers Against Unlawful Detention, Meddling in Civil Matters

Lagos – July 3, 2025 – The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, has issued a stern warning to officers under his command against the unnecessary and prolonged detention of suspects and interference in civil disputes.

Addressing officers during a strategic engagement session, AIG Fayoade praised personnel of the Zone 2 Command for their dedication to fighting crime but stressed the need for strict adherence to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens' rights.

The senior police officer emphasized that every officer would be held responsible for their actions and inactions, especially where the rights of Nigerians are concerned.

"Delving into civil matters and keeping suspects in detention beyond the legally permissible period undermines public trust and contradicts our core mandate," AIG Fayoade said. "We are here to uphold justice, not to subvert it."

He further charged officers to steer clear of all forms of corrupt practices, urging them to remain proactive, ethical, and effective in their duties.

The session forms part of the Command’s ongoing efforts to reinforce discipline and ensure that police conduct aligns with constitutional and democratic values.
