First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Marks World Rural Development Day, Calls for Inclusive Growth and Climate Resilience

Abuja | July 6, 2025

As the world observes World Rural Development Day 2025, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to inclusive growth, climate resilience, and rural empowerment.

In a message commemorating the day, themed “Rural Development: Resilience to Global Change,” the First Lady emphasized the critical role rural communities play in driving sustainable national development.

“Rural communities are the bedrock upon which lasting national development is built,” she stated. “We need to empower our rural populations to adapt and thrive in the face of the growing challenges of climate change, economic uncertainty, and communal conflicts.”

Senator Tinubu stressed the importance of working collectively to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas, ensuring that no community is left behind as Nigeria charts a path toward resilience and prosperity.

She called on all stakeholders—government, civil society, and the private sector—to prioritize rural transformation initiatives that provide access to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities.

Her message aligns with the United Nations’ call for global action to strengthen the capacity of rural communities to withstand external shocks, including environmental and socio-economic disruptions.

“Let us work together to ensure that no community is left behind as we build a stronger, more resilient Nigeria,” she concluded.

World Rural Development Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the need for sustained investment and policy focus on rural populations, who often face the brunt of poverty, underdevelopment, and climate vulnerability.
