Nigeria Customs Warns Travellers Against Misuse of U.S. Visas, Urges Compliance with Immigration Laws
Abuja, Nigeria – July 29, 2025
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerian travellers, cautioning against the misuse of United States entry visas and urging strict compliance with U.S. immigration laws and travel protocols.
In a statement signed by the Service’s National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS revealed that the U.S. government had raised concerns over Nigerians using visas for purposes inconsistent with their travel classification.
“Security vetting does not end when you are granted a visa or arrive in the United States. U.S. authorities continue to monitor the activities of visa holders, and any violation of immigration protocols or related laws may lead to visa revocation,” the statement said.
The NCS reminded travellers of the legal requirement to declare cash or negotiable instruments exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent at points of entry or exit, in accordance with U.S. and Nigerian financial disclosure laws. It also warned against carrying prohibited items in luggage.
Travellers were further advised to maintain good conduct both at home and abroad, as fraudulent acts committed in any jurisdiction can attract legal consequences under both Nigerian and American law.
“Passengers must be law-abiding and conscious that committing fraud anywhere can lead to prosecution in either jurisdiction,” the Customs spokesman emphasized.
In a bid to avoid any diplomatic fallout or inclusion in an expanded U.S. visa ban list, the Nigeria Customs Service disclosed that it is actively engaging with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigerian travellers continue to enjoy access to the U.S. for legitimate purposes.
“The Service is committed to ensuring Nigeria meets all necessary criteria to prevent the imposition of broader visa restrictions that could affect law-abiding citizens and genuine business travellers,” the statement concluded.
The advisory comes amid growing global scrutiny on migration and border security, with Nigerian authorities reinforcing efforts to promote responsible international travel.
