Lagos, Nigeria – July 8, 2025 — In a remarkable display of grassroots development and intergovernmental collaboration, the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Primary Health Care Centre was officially commissioned in Ijeh Road, Obalende, by the Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State.

The project, named in honour of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was commissioned during a high-profile event attended by top dignitaries, including the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, who represented the First Lady; Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor; Otunba Femi Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos; Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and traditional white cap chiefs representing the Oba of Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Hajiya Nana Shettima, on behalf of Senator Oluremi Tinubu, called for enhanced collaboration among all tiers of government to improve access to quality and efficient healthcare at the grassroots level. She noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of financial autonomy for local governments has accelerated people-centered development initiatives nationwide.

“We are proud of this healthcare facility which aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. Healthcare is a fundamental right, and this centre is a gift to the future generations,” she stated, while commending the council chairman, Hon. Fuad Atanda-Lawal, for naming the edifice after the First Lady.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the project as a symbol of democratic dividends and visionary leadership. She praised the council chairman for prioritizing affordable healthcare and increasing doctors' salaries to ₦800,000 monthly, a move she said underscores the administration’s “people first” philosophy.

“This facility demonstrates how financial autonomy for local governments can translate to visible development. Ikoyi-Obalende has witnessed significant transformation under Hon. Fuad’s leadership in health, infrastructure, economic empowerment, and social development,” she added.

Former Deputy Governor, Otunba Femi Pedro, commended the chairman for acting on advice and delivering a befitting primary healthcare center, adding that such accomplishments reflect the visionary governance of Governor Sanwo-Olu and the contributions of other progressive leaders like Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, who represents Lagos Island Constituency in the State Assembly.

Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire noted that the centre aligns with SDG Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), saying Ikoyi, as the heart of Lagos, deserves such world-class health infrastructure. She praised the project as one of the best executed in the area and urged residents to utilize and maintain it responsibly.

Delivering his remarks, Chairman Fuad Atanda-Lawal, who assumed office in 2017, said the health centre was a product of strong political will, community support, and favorable economic reforms under President Tinubu, especially the fuel subsidy removal that increased funds available to local governments.

“This is more than a medical facility — it is a symbol of equity, dignity, and shared prosperity. We have ensured it is equipped and ready to serve all residents of Ikoyi-Obalende,” he said, while thanking the SSA on SDGs for her critical support in equipping the centre.

He also urged his successor to sustain and build on the foundation laid during his administration and pleaded with the community to preserve and cherish the health centre.

Representing the Health District 3, Dr. Monsurat Adeyemi hailed the project as a “success story” and recalled the council’s proactive healthcare response during the COVID-19 pandemic. She pledged the provision of uniforms for medical staff and appealed to the federal government and the First Lady to consider building staff accommodation to support the healthcare centre’s operations.

As the event concluded, attendees were encouraged to turn out en masse for the upcoming local government elections, with calls to sustain the APC-led development strides across Lagos State.

The Senator Oluremi Tinubu Primary Health Care Centre now stands as a testament to what is possible through visionary leadership, strategic collaboration, and a commitment to people-centered governance.
