Dangote Refinery Rolls Out 4,000 CNG Trucks to Revolutionise Fuel Distribution

Lagos, August 11, 2025 — Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has begun deploying 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks in a landmark fuel distribution initiative set to kick off on August 15.

The multi-billion-naira programme, valued at over N720 billion, aims to slash logistics costs, ease fuel supply bottlenecks, and improve energy accessibility across Nigeria. The trucks, imported through Apapa Port, are expected to transform downstream petroleum operations while supporting the nation’s transition to cleaner, more cost-effective fuel transportation.

The first batch of trucks has already arrived at the refinery’s Ibeju-Lekki site, received by the Vice-President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries LtdDevakumar Edwin. The convoy’s movement from Apapa drew public attention, with onlookers praising the company’s proactive approach to addressing chronic distribution challenges.

Speaking on the development, Dangote Group’s Chief of Branding and Communication, Anthony Chiejina, described the initiative as a “groundbreaking development” for Nigeria’s fuel supply network.

“This approach ensures operational efficiency while expanding our fleet. We are working closely with regulators and stakeholders to guarantee seamless deployment, which will lower distribution costs and boost nationwide fuel availability,” Chiejina said.

He revealed that at least 60 shiploads of trucks will arrive in the country within six weeks.

The CNG fleet is projected to save Nigeria more than N1.7 trillion annually in distribution costs, while the refinery itself will absorb over N1.07 trillion yearly in logistics expenses. The scheme is expected to benefit over 42 million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), reduce inflationary pressures, revitalise dormant filling stations, and create more than 15,000 direct jobs in the logistics value chain.

In addition to economic benefits, the programme is designed to curb cross-border fuel smuggling, promote environmental sustainability, and enhance energy security.

Commercial Coordinator of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), Tosin Coker, hailed the move as “highly strategic” and a clear signal that CNG is a practical solution to the nation’s energy and supply chain challenges.

“Dangote Group’s acquisition of 4,000 CNG trucks is not only impressive in scale but also a milestone achievement in accelerating gas-powered transport adoption,” Coker said.

The Dangote Refinery, the world’s largest single-train facility, is positioning the initiative as a key driver of Nigeria’s energy and economic transformation.
