Five Injured in Tanker–Bus Collision at Toyota Bus Stop, LASTMA Leads Rescue Effort

Five people were critically injured on Thursday in a collision between a petrol tanker and a commercial bus at Toyota Bus Stop, opposite the Guardian newspaper headquarters, inward Oshodi, Lagos.

The accident, which occurred during peak-hour traffic, involved a fully loaded Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker (registration T28128LA) and a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus (registration GGE 526 YG).

According to preliminary findings from the Oloto Police Station, the tanker, reportedly speeding, suffered a brake failure before ramming into the moving bus. The impact left the bus driver and four passengers — two men and two women — with severe injuries.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived swiftly, secured the scene, rescued the victims, and prevented further hazards. One injured passenger was taken to hospital by a passerby, while ambulances from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s Rescue Unit (LRU) evacuated the others for treatment.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the victims and prayed for their recovery. He urged tanker drivers and heavy-duty vehicle operators to ensure regular maintenance — especially of braking systems — and to strictly obey speed limits to prevent avoidable tragedies.

Bakare-Oki also advised truck owners to provide continuous safety training for their drivers, stressing that “the sanctity of human life must remain the paramount consideration in road transport operations.”
