Police Probe Inspector Over Alleged Extortion, Rights Violation

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, says it has launched disciplinary action against one of its personnel, Inspector Kalu, following allegations of extortion and human rights violations.

The development followed a viral social media post accusing the officer of misconduct. In a swift response, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of FCID Annex, Lagos, Margaret Ochalla, ordered the CP X-Squad to open an investigation.

According to the FCID, both Inspector Kalu and a point-of-sale (POS) agent linked to the case were arrested. During questioning, the officer claimed that the complainant had earlier been reported by community members for allegedly terrorizing residents. He further alleged that the petitioner confessed to identity theft during his detention, after which he was granted bail pending further investigation.

The POS agent reportedly admitted that the complainant had collected ₦4 million in cash from her before returning and leaving the money without explanation. The police said the full amount has since been recovered and returned to the petitioner.

Meanwhile, Inspector Kalu is facing an Orderly Room Trial over his role in the incident.

Reaffirming the force’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability, AIG Ochalla assured the public that cases of corruption or misconduct would not be tolerated. She also urged citizens to continue reporting infractions through official complaint channels.
