Day 2 of National Convention Highlights Health Benefits of Exercise and Home Wellness for Police Officers’ Families

Lagos, Nigeria | July 31, 2025 — The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) and wife of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun, has called on members of the association to incorporate regular physical exercise into their daily routines and promote wellness within their families.

This charge was made during the Sports and Fitness Day held on Day 2 of the ongoing 2025 POWA National Convention, currently taking place in Lagos. The event, which featured a blend of physical activities and health education, was designed to promote healthier lifestyles among the families of police personnel.

Speaking to participants, Dr. Egbetokun emphasized the crucial link between physical well-being and the overall performance of police officers, starting from a supportive and health-conscious home environment.

“This is why we have incorporated exercise into today’s activities,” she said. “I urge everyone to participate and enjoy themselves. But more importantly, I encourage you to make exercise a regular part of your daily routine and extend this culture of wellness to your families.”

Also speaking at the event, public health expert Mrs. Maimuna Mohammed delivered a brief but impactful health talk, focusing on the growing prevalence of hypertension within police families and the importance of early prevention through lifestyle changes.

“We are educating participants on the risk factors associated with hypertension, and how a healthy home environment contributes significantly to the physical and mental well-being of officers. When our homes are peaceful and health-oriented, our husbands are better prepared to perform effectively in their duties,” she noted.

The fitness session featured engaging activities including a spirited tug-of-war competition between POWA Executive Management, and wives of top-ranking officers including AIGs, CPs, and DCPs—adding fun and camaraderie to the wellness advocacy.

Founded in 1984, POWA has grown from its humble beginnings as an informal support group in the 1970s to a robust national platform that champions the welfare, empowerment, and education of police families. Originally centered around barracks outreach and social support, the organization has evolved into a transformative body that advocates for community development and amplifies the voices of women in the security ecosystem.

The 2025 POWA National Convention will conclude on Friday, August 1, with a Talent Hunt and Gala Dinner scheduled to hold at the prestigious Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.

As POWA continues to evolve, its leadership is reaffirming the organization’s dedication to wellness, empowerment, and the holistic development of police families across Nigeria.
