 Service Delivery: Ministry of Police Affairs Reaffirms Commitment to Police Reforms

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Ogbonaya Nlia, has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to the full implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policing reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism and enhancing effective service delivery across the Nigeria Police Force.

Dr. Nlia gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Nigeria Police Force led by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Nemi Edwin at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The meeting centered on the proposed new scheme of service for the Nigeria Police Force.

The Permanent Secretary emphasized that the Ministry will continue to work closely with the leadership of the Police to implement reforms that would not only boost professionalism but also improve the welfare and morale of officers.

He highlighted key areas of collaboration, including the development of policies and guidelines to strengthen operational efficiency, promote accountability, and ensure human rights compliance within the Force. He also stressed the importance of improving officers’ welfare and working conditions as part of broader efforts to preserve law and order.

“The Ministry of Police Affairs is fully committed to working hand-in-hand with the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders by engaging in open dialogue, sharing perspectives, and collectively addressing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” Dr. Nlia stated.

“We believe that through regular consultations and a unified approach, we can strengthen the Nigeria Police Force and enhance its capacity to serve and protect all citizens,” he added.

Focus Areas of Reform

Deliberations at the meeting touched on critical reform areas, including:

• Police welfare and officers’ well-being
• Pension reform to guarantee a secure post-service life
• Capacity building and training for professional development
• Promotion processes and career progression
• Discipline and accountability within the Force
• Introduction of a modern Performance Management System (PMS)

Police Leadership Commends Ministry

Earlier in his remarks, AIG Nemi Edwin commended the Ministry for its support and lauded Dr. Nlia’s leadership, describing him as “a unique leader.” He noted that the Nigeria Police Force cannot successfully implement the new service scheme without the active involvement and guidance of the Ministry of Police Affairs.

He, therefore, appealed for the Ministry’s input in the review process, stressing that collaboration is key to the success of the initiative.

At the end of the meeting, the Permanent Secretary and his delegation paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, for further consultations on the proposed service scheme.

The initiative is expected to reposition the Nigeria Police Force for improved efficiency, accountability, and service delivery to Nigerians in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
