Ibeju-Lekki Council Cracks Down on Illegal Trading to Restore Clean Environment

Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos — The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has intensified its environmental enforcement drive, targeting illegal trading and encroachment along major walkways and roads in Bogije, Lakowe, and Ogunfayo.

The operation, led by the council’s Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr. Lateef Ajumobi, was carried out under the directive of Executive Chairman Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa.

According to the council, the exercise was prompted by rising disorderliness in the affected communities, where traders had illegally occupied pedestrian walkways and road sections, turning public spaces into commercial hubs. This not only obstructed free movement of vehicles and pedestrians but also posed sanitation and safety concerns.

The enforcement team dismantled the makeshift stalls and redirected unlicensed vendors to designated shops and approved markets. Council officials said the move was necessary to decongest the corridors and restore environmental sanity.

“The operation is part of our ongoing commitment to a cleaner, safer, and more orderly Ibeju-Lekki,” Mr. Ajumobi stated. “Traders must operate within approved areas. Walkways and roadways are public utilities and not markets.”

Residents and commuters welcomed the intervention, noting that the action has already eased congestion and improved accessibility along the affected routes.

The council emphasized that similar operations will continue across the local government to curb environmental abuse, discourage indiscriminate street trading, and promote a sustainable urban environment.
