Igbogbo/Baiyeku Council Boss Backs Students’ Campaign Against Domestic, Sexual Violence

The Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, has restated his administration’s commitment to combating domestic and sexual violence, calling on young people to take the lead in building a society free of abuse.

Aroyewun, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Wasiu Olowu, made the pledge on Monday at the Council Secretariat in Igbogbo while receiving students and teachers of Zumratul Islamiyyah Senior Grammar School. The students had embarked on an advocacy march as part of activities marking Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, themed “Turn Lagos Purple.”

Addressing the campaigners, Hon. Olowu praised the students for boldly speaking out, describing them as “ambassadors of change” whose actions would inspire both peers and adults to reject violence in all forms.

“The Chairman strongly believes that the foundation of a safe and progressive society begins with the younger generation. By speaking up, you are already shaping a future where respect, dignity, and protection are non-negotiable values,” Olowu said.

He emphasized that the fight against domestic and sexual violence should not be left solely to government and advocacy groups, but must involve families, schools, and community members.

Aroyewun also assured that the Council would continue to support awareness drives, community education, and initiatives aimed at protecting the rights of children, women, and vulnerable persons. He urged the students to practice the lessons of the campaign in their daily lives, beyond carrying advocacy banners.

The event, which coincided with the resumption of schools for a new academic session, provided students an opportunity to blend civic engagement with their educational pursuits, further strengthening the call for collective responsibility in tackling domestic and sexual violence.
