LASTMA Deploys Drones for Smarter Traffic Management and Security in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched the use of drones to strengthen traffic control, boost security surveillance, and enhance public safety across the state.

The initiative, unveiled under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, marks a major shift from traditional traffic management methods to advanced digital operations, aimed at reducing congestion, preventing accidents, and improving emergency response.

Speaking at the launch, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the drone deployment as a “watershed moment” in Lagos’ traffic management system.

“This transition goes beyond acquiring equipment; it represents a strategic reform that positions LASTMA at the forefront of digital governance. These drones will provide real-time aerial oversight, enabling swifter interventions, better safety outcomes, stronger security frameworks, and a more disciplined motoring culture,” Bakare-Oki said.

The drones, equipped with high-definition cameras and aerial monitoring capabilities, are expected to help LASTMA move from reactive enforcement to predictive, intelligence-driven operations.

Bakare-Oki assured Lagosians that the technology would be deployed under strict privacy, ethical, and regulatory standards to safeguard public trust.

He also emphasized that the move aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, which prioritizes technology and innovation in creating a safer, smarter, and more livable Lagos.

The drones will complement LASTMA’s emergency response efforts, including its existing toll-free hotline (080000527862), while improving efficiency in handling road accidents, traffic disruptions, and other incidents across the metropolis.
