 Sanwo-Olu Wins National Award for Social Protection Implementation

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been honoured with the Champion of Care Award for Best Social Protection Implementation in Nigeria.

The award, which recognises excellence in social protection delivery, was presented in acknowledgement of the governor’s administration’s efforts in strengthening the National Social Register (NSR) and rolling out programmes that directly benefit vulnerable groups in the state.

Under Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, Lagos has disbursed more than ₦130 billion in social protection support to over 18.5 million residents through various coordinated interventions.

The state government has also enhanced the NSR, now one of the world’s largest social protection databases, by integrating the National Identification Number (NIN). This has improved reliability, inclusivity, and access for households and individuals, with more than 19 million entries recorded.

In addition, initiatives such as the Ounje Eko food subsidy programme have been launched to help low-income households access affordable and nutritious food. The state has further decentralised governance through local committees, ensuring that interventions against food insecurity and malnutrition reach grassroots communities.

Officials described the award as a validation of the administration’s drive to build a more inclusive and compassionate Lagos. The government also reiterated its commitment to advancing social protection programmes that prioritise the interests of the most vulnerable residents.
