Six Dead, Nine Injured in Tragic Crash on Lekki–Epe Expressway

LAGOS – A devastating road traffic accident on the Lekki–Epe Expressway, near Ibeju Bus Stop, has claimed the lives of six people and left nine others injured.

The crash, which occurred on Sunday, involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck and a white Mazda commercial bus with registration number AKD 336YD. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the fatalities include two men, three women, and a male child, while three men and six women sustained varying degrees of injuries. Four passengers escaped unhurt.

Emergency response teams from FRSC Corridor 13 and Zebra 46 of the Ibeju-Lekki Unit Command, supported by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), swiftly arrived at the scene. The injured victims were rushed to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, and Hammond Hospital, while the deceased were deposited at the FMC mortuary.

Preliminary investigations revealed that speeding, route violation, and dangerous driving were the major causes of the accident.

Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and the injured. He reiterated the Corps’ consistent warnings that excessive speeding and reckless driving remain the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.

Quoting the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, mni, FCA, FCTA, CPFA, Hamzat reminded drivers that “speed thrills but kills,” urging motorists to embrace patience, discipline, and defensive driving at all times.

He also stressed that crashes, especially during the Ember Months, are not the result of supernatural forces but are caused by human recklessness and poor judgment.

While commending the prompt intervention of sister agencies, Hamzat emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility that requires collaboration and strict adherence to traffic regulations.
