Dangote Refinery Refutes Claims of Importing Substandard Fuel, Clarifies Feedstock Imports

Lagos, Nigeria – October 10, 2025

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has debunked recent media reports alleging that it is importing petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing the claims as false, misleading, and inconsistent with its operations and standards.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company explained that the cargo referenced in the reports was an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol, emphasizing that it will undergo full processing at the refinery’s complex to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.

“As a world-scale complex refinery, we process a broad range of crude oils and intermediate feed stocks, which is standard global practice aimed at optimizing production efficiency and maintaining product quality,” the statement read.

The company further clarified that it operates within a Free Trade Zone and produces only high-quality fuels that comply with all regulatory and environmental specifications. Dangote Refinery also highlighted that its exports to the United States and Europe — some of the most tightly regulated petroleum markets — demonstrate its strict adherence to global benchmarks for safety and performance.

“All imported feed stocks are accompanied by quality certificates, which are transparently shared with relevant regulators,” the statement added. “We are also willing to make these documents publicly available in the interest of transparency and accountability.”

Reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s energy security, Dangote Petroleum Refinery restated its mission to advance energy independence, uphold global best practices, and deliver cleaner, high-quality fuels for both domestic consumption and international export.
