One Killed as Train Hits Dispatch Rider at PWD Railway Crossing — LASTMA Warns Against Reckless Riding

A fatal accident occurred on Thursday morning at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja, Lagos, claiming the life of a dispatch rider who collided with a moving train.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations revealed that the dispatch rider, who was reportedly speeding, attempted to beat the train by hastily crossing the tracks to access the GRA axis of Ikeja. Tragically, he was struck by the oncoming train and died instantly.

LASTMA officials, who arrived promptly at the scene, immediately cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and to manage traffic flow, working in coordination with officers from the Shogunle Police Division. The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) later evacuated the victim’s remains.

In a statement, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy to the family of the deceased and described the incident as “a distressing reminder of the consequences of impatience and disregard for traffic safety rules, especially at railway level crossings.”

Bakare-Oki urged dispatch riders and all motorists to remain cautious, patient, and disciplined on the roads. He emphasized strict adherence to traffic signals and government-installed warning signs, not only at railway intersections but across Lagos State.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to continuous public sensitization, proactive enforcement, and safety advocacy aimed at ensuring sanity and order on Lagos roads.
