Dangote Cement Champions Sustainable Industrial Growth Across Africa with Low-Carbon Logistics and Digital Innovation
Accra, Ghana – November 4, 2025 – Africa’s leading cement producer, Dangote Cement Plc, has reaffirmed its commitment to driving sustainable transformation across the continent’s construction and logistics value chain through innovative, low-carbon, and technology-driven solutions.
Speaking at the 14th Africa CemTrade Summit held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra, Ghana, the Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, Mr. Arvind Pathak, emphasized that sustainability is central to the company’s business philosophy and operational strategy.
Delivering a presentation titled “Sustainable Innovation in the Sub-Saharan Africa Cement Distribution Value Chain,” Pathak stated that the company continues to align profitability with environmental stewardship, ensuring that industrial progress goes hand in hand with ecological responsibility.
“Sustainability has never been an afterthought for us—it is central to how we grow, innovate, and operate,” Pathak said. “For Africa’s industrial future to be viable, sustainability must make economic sense. Our model ensures profitability while protecting the planet and creating decent jobs.”
Over the past two decades, Dangote Cement has grown from a local player to a continental giant, operating in 11 countries with a combined production capacity of 55 million tonnes per annum. Beyond scale, the company distinguishes itself by embedding sustainability into every stage of its operations—from production to logistics.
Pathak disclosed that since 2021, the company has co-processed over 1.5 million tonnes of alternative fuels, converting industrial, agricultural, and municipal waste into energy. This initiative forms part of its broader decarbonisation strategy, targeting a 20% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 through energy-efficient technologies and nature-based carbon offset projects.
With 15 alternative fuel systems deployed across its plants, Dangote Cement has achieved up to 40% thermal substitution in countries including Senegal, Zambia, and South Africa.
A key highlight of its sustainability journey is the company’s massive investment in compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered logistics, featuring more than 3,000 CNG trucks and 1,000 dual-fuel vehicles. The initiative has significantly reduced transport emissions and operational costs.
“We are proving that economic performance and climate responsibility can move together,” Pathak said. “Our goal is to operate a fully CNG-powered fleet in Nigeria by 2026, which will cut carbon emissions per unit of energy by nearly 29%.”
Dangote Cement’s digital transformation drive is also redefining efficiency in its distribution network. Through innovations such as the Distributor Management System (DMS), Transport Management System (TMS), and Electronic Proof of Delivery (e-POD), the company has enhanced transparency, route optimisation, and real-time tracking across its supply chain.
To date, the company has mapped over 65,000 retail outlets in Nigeria and distributed more than 4,000 trucks to transport partners under its Customer Truck Empowerment Scheme (CTES)—creating thousands of jobs and boosting logistics reliability.
In addition to environmental investments, Dangote Cement has reinforced its social impact, committing over ₦12.4 billion to community development projects in 2024—four times higher than the previous year. These projects cut across education, healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment across its host communities in Africa.
Reiterating the importance of collaboration, Pathak noted that achieving low-carbon industrialisation requires partnerships and shared innovation. Dangote Cement plays an active role in global sustainability platforms, including as a founding member of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and a partner of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) to promote low-carbon cement standards, such as the Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) initiative.
Also speaking, Dr. Oyekemi Oyelola, Deputy Head of Sustainability at Dangote Cement, highlighted that the company’s business model demonstrates how industrial growth and environmental responsibility can coexist.
“Our mission is to ensure that Dangote Cement leads the transformation to bridge Africa’s infrastructure gap while promoting a resilient and greener future,” she stated.
Through these initiatives, Dangote Cement continues to set the benchmark for sustainable manufacturing and logistics in Africa, proving that economic success and environmental sustainability can thrive side by side.
