Dangote Group Partners Global Engineering Giants to Expand Fertiliser Production in Nigeria and Ethiopia

The Dangote Group has announced a series of strategic partnerships with leading international engineering and technology firms to support the expansion of its fertiliser operations in Nigeria and the development of a new fertiliser complex in Ethiopia. The move underscores the Group’s long-term ambition to boost regional food security, enhance agricultural productivity, and strengthen Africa’s role in the global fertiliser market.

Under the new agreements, Dangote Group will increase its urea production capacity in Nigeria from the current 3 million metric tons to 9 million metric tons annually. The company’s existing facility operates two production trains with a combined capacity of 3 million metric tons. The expansion will add four additional trains, positioning the company to meet growing domestic and international demand for high-quality fertiliser.

In Ethiopia, Dangote Group has commenced development of a $2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Gode, with a projected capacity of 3 million metric tons of urea per year. The facility is part of the Group’s broader industrialisation strategy and commitment to supporting agricultural growth across the continent.

To ensure world-class technology, operational reliability and engineering excellence, Dangote Group has sealed partnerships with renowned industry leaders:

• Topsoe will provide ammonia technology licensing and process design packages for six ammonia plants—four in Nigeria and two in Ethiopia. The company is globally recognised for its advanced ammonia technology and environmentally sustainable production methods.

• Saipem will handle technology licensing and design packages for the urea melt units across all six plants. With extensive expertise in fertiliser engineering, Saipem will support efficient and reliable urea production.

• Thyssenkrupp (UFT) will deliver granulation technology licensing and full process design services for the granulation units. The technology will enable the production of premium urea granules for local and international markets.

• Engineers India Limited (EIL) has been appointed as project management consultant and EPC management consultant for the four fertiliser plants being developed by Dangote Fertiliser and Petrochemical Free Zone Enterprise (DFFZE) in Lekki, Lagos. EIL brings strong credentials in delivering complex industrial infrastructure.

The Dangote Group stated that the partnerships reflect its commitment to delivering high-performance industrial assets that meet global operational and environmental standards. The company noted that the expansion is expected to boost urea and ammonia production capacity, generate thousands of jobs, enhance agricultural value chains, and drive sustainable economic growth in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and across Africa.
