Fidelity Bank Partners NCF, Lagos State to Champion Responsible Waste Management

In a renewed effort to promote environmental sustainability and responsible waste management, Fidelity Bank Plc has donated large-capacity recycling bins to Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos.

The donation took place during the 19th edition of the Walk for Nature event held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at YABATECH. Themed “Lagos, Let’s Beat Plastic Pollution,” the initiative was organized by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) in partnership with the Lagos State Government to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and the need for sustainable waste management practices.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Meksley Nwagboh, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications, Fidelity Bank Plc, reiterated the bank’s commitment to fostering environmental consciousness through impactful initiatives.

“As a socially responsible institution, we integrate sustainability into our business operations and community programmes. Beyond reducing our carbon footprint through renewable energy adoption across branches and ATMs, we continue to advocate recycling and waste reduction,” Nwagboh said.

He explained that Fidelity Bank’s environmental efforts include recycling partnerships with schools, tree planting campaigns, and beautification projects in both urban and underserved communities. “By donating these recycling bins to YABATECH, we aim to encourage responsible waste management and recycling among students,” he added.

Dr. Nwagboh also commended the Lagos State Government and the NCF for their ongoing collaboration in promoting environmental sustainability, urging Nigerians to embrace eco-friendly habits and reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

“Beating plastic pollution requires collective effort. It begins with making conscious choices — reducing single-use plastics, reusing, and recycling. Together, we can make Lagos a model megacity for environmental stewardship,” he said.

Chairman of the National Executive Council of NCF, Hon. Justice R.I.B. Adebiyi, described plastic pollution as one of the most urgent environmental challenges of the era. She noted that taking the awareness campaign to a tertiary institution for the first time was a strategic move to inspire the youth.

“Fidelity Bank’s donation is not just symbolic; it reflects responsibility and change. Young people hold the key to a cleaner and more sustainable future,” Justice Adebiyi stated.

Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, emphasized that plastic pollution has become a global concern requiring decisive action at all levels.

In appreciation, the Rector of YABATECH, Dr. (Engr.) Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, expressed gratitude to Fidelity Bank and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), which also donated two additional bins to the institution.

“The recycling bins will be strategically positioned across the campus to promote a culture of sustainability among students,” the Rector assured.

The initiative forms part of Fidelity Bank’s broader environmental and social responsibility agenda, aimed at encouraging eco-friendly practices, strengthening institutional recycling systems, and supporting Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy.
