Oyo Government Orders Street Traders to Vacate Walkways, Warns of Penalties

The Oyo State Government has issued a stern directive to traders, artisans, motor dealers and vendors occupying pedestrian walkways and roadside spaces, warning them to immediately vacate these locations or face sanctions.

Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd.), gave the warning at the authority’s secretariat in Ibadan. He emphasized that conducting business activities on walkways is illegal and poses serious risks to the public.

Adekoya noted that such practices contribute to traffic congestion, increase the likelihood of road accidents and obstruct pedestrians and shoppers. He listed several high-risk areas where illegal trading is rampant, including the University of Ibadan (U.I.) axis, Samonda, Mokola and other major routes.

He urged traders to move to approved market spaces without delay, particularly as the festive season approaches. According to him, failure to comply will attract fines and possible court prosecution.

The Oyo State Government commended OYRTMA for its proactive measures to enhance road safety and maintain public order. It reiterated its commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring the free and safe movement of residents across the state.
