NCC Urges Nigerians to Take Charge of Online Safety with New Cybersecurity Guide

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has intensified its push for safer internet usage with the release of a detailed A–Z cybersecurity guide aimed at helping telecoms consumers protect their digital lives amid rising cyber threats.

Rather than focusing solely on regulations and service providers, the Commission is placing renewed emphasis on individual responsibility, warning that everyday online activities now carry significant security risks if handled carelessly.

With smartphones, computers and internet-based services deeply embedded in daily life, the NCC noted that cybercriminals increasingly exploit human error through scams, phishing emails, malware and identity theft. According to the Commission, a single careless click can compromise personal data, finances and even national digital assets.

The newly released A–Z tips form part of the NCC’s broader consumer education and sensitisation drive, designed to equip Nigerians with practical knowledge to navigate the digital space safely. The Commission stressed that cybersecurity is no longer a technical issue alone, but a shared duty involving regulators, service providers and end users.

Over the years, the NCC has strengthened its cybersecurity posture through regulatory frameworks, minimum security standards for telecom operators and sustained public awareness campaigns. It also runs a dedicated Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT), which responds to cyber incidents and works with industry stakeholders to protect consumers and Nigeria’s Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).

In a recent publication on its official website, the Commission highlighted simple but effective measures consumers can adopt to reduce exposure to cyber risks. These include enabling two-factor authentication, using strong and unique passwords, regularly updating software and antivirus tools, and securing home and office Wi-Fi networks.

The NCC also advised users to be vigilant online by avoiding suspicious emails and links, verifying the identity of message senders, limiting the sharing of personal information, and refraining from conducting sensitive transactions on public Wi-Fi networks. Consumers were further encouraged to lock their devices and promptly report suspected scams or cyber incidents to relevant authorities.

According to the Commission, consistent adherence to these A–Z cybersecurity tips can significantly reduce vulnerability to cyber attacks and help Nigerians enjoy the benefits of digital connectivity without compromising their safety.

The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a secure and resilient digital ecosystem, urging consumers to remain alert and proactive as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand.
