NCCC DG Calls for Scaled Investment in Energy-Efficient Cooling at Lagos Marketplace Event
The Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Mrs. Tenioye Majekodunmi, has emphasised the urgent need to accelerate investment in energy-efficient and climate-smart cooling solutions as Nigeria faces rising temperatures and increasing strain on its power system.
She made the call in Lagos on Thursday while delivering the keynote address at the first Energy Efficiency & Sustainable Cooling Investment Marketplace, organised in partnership with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).
Majekodunmi warned that Nigeria’s growing demand for cooling, driven by climate change and urbanisation, requires coordinated national action and sustained private-sector investment. She reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitments under the Global Cooling Pledge, the Kigali Amendment, and the newly approved Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, which identifies sustainable cooling as a core national priority.
According to her, the Federal Government is already implementing several interventions, including strengthened refrigerant regulations, technician capacity-building programmes, updated energy-efficiency standards, and ongoing work toward a National Cooling Action Plan.
However, she stressed that government action alone is not enough.
“Nigeria needs bold private-sector innovation, stronger financing mechanisms, and deeper subnational action to build an energy-efficient and climate-resilient cooling ecosystem,” she said.
She added that equitable access to affordable cooling is essential for protecting public health, supporting livelihoods, and ensuring climate adaptation in vulnerable communities.
Majekodunmi reaffirmed the NCCC’s commitment to working closely with SEforALL, relevant MDAs, state governments, investors and development partners to mobilise large-scale financing and accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable cooling future.
