Senator Abiru Empowers 2,000 Constituents, Launches 48 Cooperatives and Flags Off Food Pack Distribution in Lagos East
Lagos, December 8, 2025 — Residents of Lagos East Senatorial District witnessed a landmark empowerment exercise as Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA, unveiled 48 cooperative societies with a total take-off grant of N480 million. The Senator also distributed empowerment items to approximately 2,000 constituents and flagged off the distribution of food packs to 12,000 households across the district’s 98 wards in 16 LGAs/LCDAs.
Described by attendees as one of the largest grassroots empowerment programs in the district’s history, the event underscores Abiru’s commitment to governance rooted in inclusion, compassion, and tangible outcomes.
Addressing a cross-section of traditional rulers, political and community leaders, party faithful, women groups, youths, and artisans, Senator Abiru emphasized that the program reflects his leadership philosophy: translating public office into measurable value and lasting hope for constituents.
“True empowerment is not all about handouts,” Abiru said. “It is about enabling people to unlock their potential, create wealth, and contribute meaningfully to national development.”
Each of the 48 cooperatives, representing market women associations, youth organizations, farmers’ groups, artisans, and trade bodies, received N10 million, aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth, access to financing, and enterprise development at the grassroots level.
In addition to the cooperatives, about 2,000 residents received starter kits and empowerment tools including freezers, generators, grinding machines, industrial sewing machines, and head dryers, designed to promote self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.
Senator Abiru also flagged off the distribution of food packs to 12,000 households in preparation for the Christmas and New Year season, continuing a program he has maintained for three consecutive years to support the elderly, unemployed youths, women, and persons living with disabilities.
Highlighting achievements under his three pillars—legislation, empowerment, and endowment—the Senator referenced initiatives in education, healthcare, road infrastructure, digital skills, and bills aimed at economic inclusion and financial stability, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Traditional and political leaders, including HRM Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi of Ikorodu, APC State Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, and former Lagos Deputy Governor Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, praised the Senator for his innovative, people-focused programs. Market leaders, artisans, and youth representatives pledged to utilize the empowerment tools and grants responsibly.
The event also drew members of the Governance Advisory Council, local government chairmen, religious leaders, and several other dignitaries, highlighting the wide-reaching impact of Senator Abiru’s initiatives on Lagos East.
