Two Dead, Three Critically Injured as Dangote Mixer Truck Crashes Into Vehicles at Iyana Meiran

Two persons have lost their lives while three others sustained critical injuries following a fatal road crash involving a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck and multiple vehicles at Iyana Meiran, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the tragic incident occurred at Iyana Meiran inward Meiran Road, near the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Meiran. According to preliminary findings, the accident was caused by a Dangote mixer truck which was allegedly speeding before suffering brake failure, leading to loss of control.

The out-of-control truck reportedly rammed into a commercial mini-bus, popularly known as Korope (registration number EPP 541 YF), and four tricycles (Marwa) with registration numbers KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN and EKY 122 QP. The impact caused extensive damage, leaving commuters trapped inside the mangled vehicles.

LASTMA officials, assisted by members of the public, promptly arrived at the scene and carried out rescue operations, successfully evacuating three critically injured victims from the wreckage. The agency immediately cordoned off the affected area and implemented traffic diversion measures to prevent further accidents and ease movement.

Security operatives from the Meiran Police Division were alerted, with the Divisional Police Officer leading officers to the scene to provide security support during the rescue and recovery exercise.

However, the driver of the Dangote mixer truck reportedly fled the scene upon realising the severity of the crash.

The injured victims were rushed to Mobonke Hospital along Meiran Road for urgent medical attention, while the remains of the two deceased persons were handed over to the Nigeria Police for evacuation.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on Lagos roads, while urging motorists—especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles—to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also warned against excessive speeding and poor vehicle maintenance, noting that both remain major and avoidable causes of fatal road crashes in the state.

LASTMA further appealed to all road users to exercise caution, comply with traffic regulations and prioritise safety at all times.
