UNILAG Medical Alumni Mark 40 Years with Solar Power Project, Renew Support for College

The 1985 alumni of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) College of Medicine have marked the 40th anniversary of their graduation with fresh commitments to support infrastructure development and student welfare at the institution.

The milestone celebration, held in Lagos, featured the donation of a solar power system to the College of Medicine as well as the completion of refurbishment works at Alliakilu Hall, the female hostel within the college.

Speaking at the event, President of the alumni set, Mr. Kofo Ogunyakin, described the reunion as an opportunity for members to reconnect and demonstrate gratitude to the institution that laid the foundation for their professional careers.

According to him, members of the set, who are currently practicing across different parts of the world, agreed to translate their appreciation into tangible projects that would improve learning and living conditions for students.

“We felt it was important to return home and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the college, not just in words but through visible impact,” Ogunyakin said.

The Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, commended the alumni for their sustained support, noting that such interventions had become increasingly important in sustaining academic standards amid funding constraints.

He said the alumni’s contributions to infrastructure and equipment over the years had played a key role in helping the college maintain its accreditation and continue producing quality medical professionals.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, praised the alumni for their commitment and encouraged them to extend their support to mentorship and professional guidance for younger doctors.

She noted that the medical profession was facing significant challenges, including the migration of skilled personnel, and stressed the importance of experienced professionals supporting those still in training.

The anniversary celebration included inspection tours of the donated projects and discussions on future areas of collaboration, with the alumni reaffirming their readiness to support capacity building, mentorship and further infrastructural development at the College of Medicine.
