Lagos Assures Smooth Traffic Flow as 64-Day Rehabilitation of Lekki–Epe Expressway Begins

The Lagos State Government has assured motorists and residents of uninterrupted vehicular movement and enhanced safety as rehabilitation works commence on the 20-kilometre Lekki–Epe Expressway, a project scheduled to last 64 days.

The assurance was given on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, who stated that robust, well-coordinated traffic management measures have been deployed to minimise inconvenience during the construction period.

Addressing operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Giwa clarified that the rehabilitation exercise would not involve the closure of the expressway. Instead, traffic control measures will be strategically implemented at critical intersections to sustain seamless vehicular movement along the corridor.

According to him, traffic management arrangements have been carefully designed and rolled out in phases, with the deployment of over 305 LASTMA officers to reinforce operations across the three existing traffic management zones covering the axis.

He explained that the expanded deployment is aimed at ensuring free flow of traffic, swift incident response and strict enforcement of traffic regulations, all in a bid to maintain orderliness and guarantee road safety.

Giwa noted that traffic volume along the Lekki–Epe corridor has increased significantly due to the concentration of major economic and infrastructural assets in the area, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery, alongside other rapidly growing commercial and industrial developments.

To address potential traffic disruptions, he disclosed that LASTMA has deployed a range of high, medium and low-capacity recovery vehicles, including tow trucks, to promptly remove broken-down vehicles and prevent secondary congestion.

He also revealed that the agency will deploy drone technology for real-time aerial surveillance to enable quick detection and resolution of traffic incidents along the Lekki–Epe Expressway and other strategic locations across the state.

The Special Adviser added that the traffic management framework includes the installation of directional signage, improved illumination and other essential safety features to guide motorists during the rehabilitation period.

Personnel of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force have also been deployed to support LASTMA operations, enhance security and safeguard lives and property throughout the project.

Motorists were advised to utilise alternative routes provided by the government to ease pressure on the construction corridor. Giwa specifically recommended the Coaster Road from Ogombo through Abraham Adesanya as a viable alternative route during the rehabilitation.

He urged road users to exercise patience, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officials, stressing that public discipline and cooperation are critical to the success of the project.

The Lagos State Government appealed for the understanding and cooperation of the public as it undertakes the rehabilitation, describing the project as a vital investment aimed at improving mobility, enhancing public safety and supporting sustainable economic growth.
