LASTMA Rescues Suspected Drunk Driver in Severe Ebute-Ero Crash, Issues Fresh Warning Against Drink-Driving
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a serious road traffic crash involving a suspected drunk driver at Ebute-Ero inward NEPA, Apongbon, in the early hours of today.
According to preliminary findings, a male driver, believed to be heavily intoxicated, was driving a Honda Jeep with registration number FKJ 562 JF at an excessive and uncontrollable speed when he rammed into the rear of a moving Scania truck while descending the bridge. The impact left the driver critically trapped inside the wreckage of his vehicle, creating an immediate life-threatening situation.
LASTMA rescue operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene and carried out a careful emergency extraction of the trapped driver. He was subsequently handed over to security operatives and rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
To prevent secondary accidents and ensure the safety of other road users, LASTMA officers promptly secured the crash scene, effectively controlling traffic and restoring order along the affected route. Officers of the Ebute-Ero Police Division also provided security support throughout the rescue, traffic management and recovery operations.
Following the rescue, LASTMA’s recovery team evacuated both vehicles from the roadway, after which they were handed over to security authorities for further investigation and necessary legal action.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, described the crash as entirely avoidable and expressed concern over the reckless conduct that led to it, while wishing the injured driver a speedy recovery.
Hon. Giwa reiterated the Lagos State Government’s consistent warnings against driving under the influence of alcohol, stressing that drink-driving remains one of the most dangerous forms of road indiscipline. He noted that such behaviour not only endangers the driver but also puts the lives of other road users at serious risk.
He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening enforcement of traffic laws and prioritising the protection of lives and property across the state.
LASTMA has again urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, exercise caution and responsibility behind the wheel, and completely abstain from alcohol consumption before driving, warning that drinking and driving can be fatal.
