LASWARCO Extends Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Sensitisation to Ibeju-Lekki

The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) has expanded its community engagement efforts to Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area with a sensitisation programme focused on safe water consumption, sanitation and hygiene practices.

The outreach, held under the theme “Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene,” brought together residents, community leaders, borehole drillers, water vendors—including sachet and bottled water producers—tanker operators and other stakeholders to promote safe, reliable and hygienic water use in the fast-growing council area.

Welcoming participants, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman of Conference 57, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, described water safety as a critical issue in the area. He noted that with rapid development and population growth, proper regulation of water consumption had become essential.

Hon. Olowa commended Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for prioritising water safety across the state and urged all stakeholders to fully embrace the lessons and recommendations from the sensitisation programme.

In her address, the Executive Secretary of LASWARCO, Mrs. Oluwabukola Khadijah Adeyemo, explained that although Lagos State is surrounded by water, much of it is not safe for direct consumption due to contamination, saltwater intrusion, heavy metals and poor handling practices.

She warned that unsafe water sources and improperly sited boreholes—especially those located close to septic tanks and soak-aways—could expose residents to waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever and diarrhoea.

“This programme demonstrates our commitment to bridging the gap between awareness and compliance, particularly in rapidly developing areas like Ibeju-Lekki,” Adeyemo said. “Safe water is life, but poorly managed water can pose a serious threat to public health and the environment.”

Key aspects of the sensitisation exercise included guidance on household water treatment, safe storage and hygiene practices, as well as the need for stronger collaboration between regulators, service providers and host communities to ensure sustainable access to potable water.

Dignitaries at the event included the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Water Corporation, Hon. Bode Olaniyan; officials of the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission; the Director, Lagos State Health District III, Mrs. Mary Akinola; former supervisors of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government; the Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, Comrade Jabita Adebola; and other stakeholders.

The sensitisation programme forms part of LASWARCO’s ongoing efforts to protect consumers and strengthen regulation within Lagos State’s water sector, particularly in areas increasingly dependent on alternative water sources.
