 Sahara Group Foundation, Ibeju-Lekki LG Launch Waste-to-Wealth Recycling Hub

Residents of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Lagos State, can now earn income from recyclable waste following the launch of the Sahara Go-Recycling Hub by the Sahara Group Foundation, in partnership with the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government.

The initiative, part of Sahara Group Foundation’s broader waste-to-wealth programme, is designed to promote environmental sustainability while creating economic opportunities for residents. Through the scheme, community members can exchange recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, plastic containers, paper, nylon and aluminium cans for cash rewards, thereby reducing pollution, supporting a circular economy, and driving job creation and financial inclusion.

Speaking at the launch, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, expressed appreciation to the Sahara Group Foundation for bringing the initiative to the council area. He recalled that environmental sustainability was a major pillar of his administration during his first term in office, noting that the recycling hub aligns perfectly with the local government’s vision for a cleaner and greener Ibeju-Lekki.

Hon. Olowa commended the Sahara Group Foundation for consistently expanding the recycling initiative across Lagos State, describing the hub as a practical avenue for residents to turn waste into wealth. According to him, the project will not only improve environmental hygiene but also empower residents economically.

The council chairman urged residents to fully embrace the initiative, describing it as an additional source of income. He specifically called on traditional rulers, market women and youth groups to take ownership of the programme and maximise its benefits for the community.

Explaining how the scheme works, residents can take recyclable items to the Sahara Go-Recycling Hub located at the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Secretariat in Igando-Oloja and receive cash incentives in exchange. Participation does not require any registration fee, and accepted items include clean plastic bottles, plastic containers, aluminium cans and nylon.

Payments can be made instantly, or participants may choose to create a digital wallet to save their earnings. Residents are allowed to recycle as often as they wish, with the hub operating from Monday to Friday.
