Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Free Eye Care Initiative Benefits 1,000 Nigeria Police Force Officers, CP Seeks Continuity
No fewer than 1,000 officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos State have benefited from a free eye screening and corrective glasses programme approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with the Commissioner of Police describing the intervention as unprecedented and critical to effective policing.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Moshood Jimoh commended the governor for extending the initiative to personnel of the command, noting that it reflects a strong commitment to the welfare and operational efficiency of security officers in the state.
The programme, which recently concluded, provided free eye examinations and prescription eyeglasses to 1,000 police officers and members of their families. According to the CP, the inclusion of the Lagos State Police Command followed an urgent appeal he made upon learning about the initiative, which was promptly approved by the governor.
Describing the intervention as timely, the CP explained that the demanding nature of police work often exposes officers to stress that can gradually impair vision.
“Even though our eyesight may be sound at the point of enlistment, the daily rigours of policing can affect vision over time. This programme has helped to identify and correct such challenges,” he said.
He added that officers diagnosed with refractive errors and other vision-related issues were provided with corrective glasses, while others received professional guidance on maintaining healthy eyesight.
The CP stressed that good vision is fundamental to effective policing, warning that undetected visual impairments could hinder officers’ performance in critical situations. He described the initiative as the first of its kind in the Lagos State Police Command and appealed for its periodic continuation, suggesting a follow-up phase within three months to accommodate personnel not captured in the initial batch.
“We are hopeful that Mr. Governor will consider extending this programme so that more of our personnel can benefit. Continuous support like this makes policing in Lagos easier and more effective,” he said.
The Senior Special Assistant on Transportation and Logistics, Comrade Hassan Adekoya, who initiated the programme, disclosed that 1,000 police officers have so far benefited from the free eye care intervention. He expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for supporting and approving the initiative.
One of the beneficiaries, Inspector Kabiru Magaji, described the programme as life-changing. After receiving his prescription eyeglasses, he thanked the governor and the police leadership for facilitating the exercise.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity. This eyeglass will help me in reading and carrying out my duties effectively. I truly appreciate this support,” he said.
The free eye care initiative forms part of the Lagos State Government’s broader health and welfare programmes aimed at strengthening security delivery and improving the wellbeing of frontline officers across the state.
