Customs Cares: Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command Commissions Modern Classrooms at Kirikiri Custodial Centre
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Area Command, has commissioned a modern block of classrooms at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative under the Customs Cares framework.
The project, unveiled on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, features fully furnished classrooms, a borehole, water closet facilities, a well-equipped library, and a functional Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre. The initiative underscores the Service’s commitment to community development and inmate rehabilitation through education.
The project was initiated by the former Customs Area Controller of the Command, Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs (ACG) Eghosa Joy Edelduok, who described education as a vital tool for rehabilitation, personal transformation, and successful reintegration of inmates into society. She noted that the facility represents more than just a physical structure, but a symbol of hope and renewal for inmates seeking a second chance.
ACG Edelduok also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs for his leadership and support, as well as to officers, partners, and stakeholders who contributed to the project’s successful execution.
Following her redeployment and promotion, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Bolaji Lukman Adigun, sustained the initiative and ensured its completion. In his remarks, Adigun emphasized the importance of continuity in public service, noting that the facility would provide inmates with practical skills, educational opportunities, and renewed hope for the future.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to implementing impactful social interventions under the Customs Cares initiative. He stated that the Nigeria Customs Service would continue to align its corporate social responsibility efforts with sustainable development priorities, particularly in education, healthcare, water provision, and literacy.
Adeniyi commended ACG Edelduok for her foresight in initiating the project and described the new facility as a practical demonstration of the Service’s resolve to go beyond its statutory responsibilities of trade facilitation and border security to positively impact lives and communities.
Also speaking at the event, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General Amos Kupan, lauded the Nigeria Customs Service for supporting the rehabilitation mandate of the Correctional Service. He noted that the new facility would enhance the learning environment within the custodial centre and strengthen educational and vocational training programmes.
Stakeholders at the ceremony equally applauded the initiative, commending the Nigeria Customs Service for extending its impact beyond its core functions to promote human capital development and nation-building.
The Comptroller-General of Customs formally commissioned the facility and conducted a tour of the project, reiterating the Service’s dedication to initiatives that foster social development and sustainable national growth.
