GTCO Reaffirms Support for Sports Development as Lagos STL Clinches Majekodunmi Cup at 2026 NPA Lagos Polo Tournament
LAGOS, Nigeria — (GTCO) has reinforced its commitment to sports development in Nigeria and across Africa following the conclusion of the 2026 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament, where Lagos STL emerged champions of the prestigious Majekodunmi Cup.
As headline sponsor of one of Africa’s most celebrated polo tournaments, GTCO backed a competition that blended sporting excellence with culture, lifestyle and international participation. The 2026 edition, hosted at the historic from January 27 to February 15, drew elite local and international teams, dignitaries, business leaders and thousands of spectators.
The Majekodunmi Cup final delivered a high-intensity contest, with Lagos STL defeating Shoreline/A1 10–7 in a dramatic encounter sealed by a late goal. The triumph capped a dominant run for STL, who also lifted the Independence Cup, Dapo Ojora Cup, Owen Cup and the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup — a clean sweep that underscored the team’s strength and consistency throughout the tournament.
Speaking on the significance of the event, GTCO’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Segun Agbaje, described sport as a powerful tool for national development and global positioning.
“This tournament celebrates not only the noble sport of polo but the values of teamwork, discipline, fair play and excellence. Beyond the field, it showcases Nigeria and Africa to a global audience. Our longstanding sponsorship reflects our belief that sport can create opportunities, foster connections and deliver world-class experiences,” Agbaje said.
Lagos STL captain Yasin Amusan, who was named Most Valuable Player of the Majekodunmi Cup final, attributed the victory to resilience, preparation and unity within the team. He also commended supporters for their energy throughout the competition.
Although Shoreline/A1 finished runners-up in both the Majekodunmi and Independence Cups, the team secured the Oba of Lagos Cup earlier in the tournament. Other highlights included Lagos Art Hotel’s victory in the Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup and Kano Golden Alchemy’s triumph in the Sani Dangote Memorial Cup, reflecting the event’s competitive depth and national spread.
Founded in 1904, the Lagos Polo Club remains one of Africa’s oldest sporting institutions, and its international tournament continues to stand as a major cultural and sporting landmark.
