Lagos APC Dismisses Opposition’s Call for Fresh Electoral Act Amendment as ‘Political Grandstanding’

The All Progressive Congress  (APC) in Lagos State has criticised opposition parties pushing for a fresh amendment to the Electoral Act 2022, describing their agitation as hollow and politically motivated.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Lagos State chapter of the ruling party said recent calls by opposition elements for a review of the Electoral Act were not rooted in genuine democratic reform but in frustration over electoral defeats.

The party argued that those championing amendments had failed to demonstrate internal organisation, coherent policy direction, or credible electoral platforms, accusing them of resorting to rhetoric and public protests instead of constructive engagement.

According to the APC, rather than working within the framework established by the and implemented by the (INEC), opposition parties have opted for what it described as “blame-shifting and theatrical outrage.”

The Lagos APC further referenced the outcome of recent by-elections, asserting that some opposition parties were unable to deploy polling agents across all voting units — a development it said reflected organisational weakness rather than flaws in the electoral system.

The party maintained that democracy thrives on vision, competence, and grassroots mobilisation, not merely press conferences and protests.

It emphasised that any future review of Nigeria’s electoral framework should be guided by national interest, empirical evidence, and respect for democratic institutions, rather than reactions to electoral losses.
