Reckless Speeding Truck Causes Collision at Apakun Bridge, Injures Two Pedestrians

The Lagos State Government has raised concern over a serious road traffic accident involving a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-laden truck and a private vehicle at Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi, which left two pedestrians injured on Sunday.

According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred at the crest of the bridge when a heavy-duty truck with registration number EKY 120 YK, allegedly travelling at excessive speed, rammed into a moving Toyota Corolla, registration number EKY 289 HM. The impact caused severe disruption to traffic and created a dangerous situation along the busy corridor.

During the collision, two pedestrians were struck, while the driver of the Toyota Corolla sustained serious injuries. All three victims were rescued from the scene and immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were the first responders, coordinating rescue operations and ensuring the safe evacuation of the injured. Security personnel from the Ajao Estate Police Division provided support, helping to secure the area and prevent further incidents during the emergency response.

Given the highly combustible nature of the truck’s cargo, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were also deployed to the scene as a precautionary measure to manage any potential emergency involving the gas-laden vehicle.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, condemned the recurring cases of road accidents caused by overspeeding, particularly involving trucks and articulated vehicles. He described the behaviour as irresponsible and dangerous, stressing that it undermines the state government’s efforts to ensure road safety.

Hon. Giwa warned operators of trucks, tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles to strictly comply with traffic laws and speed limits, noting that the government would enforce sanctions against any driver found endangering lives through reckless driving.

He also expressed sympathy to the injured victims and wished them a speedy recovery, while assuring Lagos residents of the government’s continued commitment to traffic safety and effective transportation management.

LASTMA, in a statement, urged motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits and adhere to traffic regulations to protect lives and property on Lagos roads.
