Zarar Maru Foundation Visits Defence Minister, Advocates Stronger Women, Peace and Security Framework
Abuja, Nigeria — Zarar Maru Foundation has paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, to commend his leadership and advocate for the deepening of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda within Nigeria’s defence and security architecture.
The visit served as a strategic engagement platform to discuss the need for gender-responsive security approaches, with particular emphasis on the protection of women and girls, conflict prevention, and the meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding and security decision-making processes.
Speaking during the visit, the Founder of Zarar Maru Foundation, Mariam Yaro, stressed that inclusive security leadership is critical to achieving sustainable peace in Nigeria.
“The Women, Peace and Security agenda is not merely a policy commitment; it is a necessity for sustainable peace. We commend the Honourable Minister of Defence for his leadership and for advancing security approaches that recognise women as critical stakeholders in peacebuilding and national stability,” Yaro said.
She highlighted the Foundation’s ongoing interventions in peace advocacy, community resilience, and support for vulnerable populations, particularly in conflict-affected communities across Northern Nigeria. According to her, effective implementation of WPS commitments requires strong collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, civil society organisations, and development partners at both national and grassroots levels.
In his response, General Christopher Gwabin Musa reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the Women, Peace and Security agenda. He noted that inclusive, people-centred security strategies remain essential to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges and achieving long-term peace and stability.
The visit concluded with a shared commitment by both parties to sustained partnership, continuous dialogue, and collective action towards advancing peace, security, and inclusive governance in line with the principles of the Women, Peace and Security framework.
