Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Deploys Advanced Digital Technologies to Boost Emergency Response on Lagos Roads

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority  (LASTMA) has announced a major leap in its emergency response capabilities following the strategic deployment of advanced digital technologies aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing accident-related fatalities across Lagos State.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that the integration of cutting-edge surveillance drones, Traffic Management System (TMS) cameras, GPS-enabled patrol vehicles, intelligent communication devices, body cameras, automated incident-detection platforms and a centralized command-and-control hub has significantly transformed the agency’s operations.

According to Bakare-Oki, the infusion of modern technology has drastically reduced response times and improved coordination during road emergencies. He explained that traffic incidents can now be detected in real-time, verified through digital feeds and communicated instantly to the nearest patrol or rescue unit for swift intervention.

“Our commitment to technological modernization is anchored on the imperative to safeguard human life,” he stated. “Every minute saved in emergency response is invaluable. These intelligent systems have empowered our operatives to respond with greater speed, precision and professionalism.”

He noted that LASTMA’s Rescue Team, Monitoring and Surveillance Unit, Comptrollers, Commanders and Zonal Heads are now equipped with mobile data terminals and integrated communication tools linked directly to the central command centre. This system enables prompt traffic rerouting, immediate collaboration with medical and security agencies, and rapid clearance of accident scenes to prevent secondary crashes and prolonged congestion.

Bakare-Oki further revealed that the adoption of predictive data analytics has strengthened proactive traffic management across Lagos. By mapping congestion patterns, high-risk corridors and accident-prone locations, the agency can strategically deploy personnel ahead of peak traffic periods, preventing potential disruptions before they escalate.

He described the state government’s investment in digital infrastructure as part of a broader strategy to position Lagos as a smart and resilient megacity, noting that the modernization drive underscores the administration’s commitment to public safety and institutional efficiency.

Beyond emergency response, the technological upgrade has improved documentation accuracy, enhanced transparency in enforcement processes and supported evidence-based policy formulation. Digital reporting platforms now provide comprehensive records of incidents, enabling continuous evaluation and refinement of operational strategies.

Reaffirming LASTMA’s mandate to protect lives and ensure orderly traffic flow, Bakare-Oki assured residents of sustained investment in innovation, personnel training and inter-agency collaboration.

He also urged motorists and commuters to cooperate with traffic officials, comply with road regulations and support ongoing initiatives aimed at improving safety and mobility across Lagos roads.
