 Okada Ban: Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Enforces Zero Tolerance for Motorcycles on Highways

The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government in Lagos has declared a zero-tolerance stance against the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, on major highways within the council area, as part of efforts to improve road safety and restore traffic order.

The administration said the directive was reinforced during a recent enforcement operation carried out across key locations in the Ibeju-Lekki axis, where officials cleared expressways of unauthorized okada and tricycle operators as well as other road obstructions.

The exercise was led by the Supervisor for Environment and Waste Management, Hon. Ogungbo Temitope Sofwan, acting on the directive of the Executive Chairman of the council, Abdullahi Sesan Olowa.

Speaking during the operation, Sofwan emphasized that the local government would continue to enforce strict compliance with traffic regulations to safeguard residents and commuters.

“Road safety is non-negotiable. Our highways are meant for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. We will not allow reckless violations that endanger lives and disrupt order,” he said.

He added that the zero-tolerance policy would be sustained through continuous monitoring and enforcement across the council area.

The local government also recalled that it recently signed the Okada and Tricycle Regulation and Control Bye-Law No. 005/2025, along with additional regulations introduced in February 2026, aimed at ensuring mandatory registration, proper identification and strict adherence to traffic safety rules by commercial motorcycle operators.

According to the council, the new regulatory framework is designed to enhance road safety, maintain environmental sanity and promote orderly transportation within the rapidly developing Ibeju-Lekki corridor.

Authorities further assured residents that the council would continue to collaborate with relevant state agencies to enforce existing traffic laws and maintain law and order across all roads in the area.
