Oyo Teachers Hold Solemn Assembly in Ibadan, Pray for Peace, Security and Improved Welfare

Teachers in Oyo State gathered in Ibadan for the annual Solemn Assembly of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), offering prayers for peace, security, improved welfare, and the progress of the education sector in the state.

Teachers in Oyo State have been urged to remain steadfast in prayers for the leadership of the State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the overall development of the state.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, Raji Oladimeji, made the call on Thursday during the union’s annual Solemn Assembly held at the NUT headquarters in Ibadan.

The annual gathering brings together teachers, union leaders, and religious clerics to commit the union’s activities, the welfare of teachers, and the peace of the state into God’s hands through prayers led by both Christian and Muslim leaders.

Speaking at the event, Oladimeji explained that the programme was designed to strengthen the spiritual foundation of the union’s leadership and members.

According to him, prayer remains a powerful tool in navigating the challenges facing the education sector and society at large.

“We pray to God to lead us and teach us what we need to know and what we need to do. We are here today to surrender our petitions to the Lord God. We believe He will hear us and our demands will come to pass,” he said.

The NUT chairman also disclosed that efforts were ongoing to improve the welfare of teachers in the state, expressing confidence in the administration of Seyi Makinde for its continued commitment to teachers’ welfare.

He commended key government agencies including the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), Oyo State Post-Primary Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and the Oyo State Ministry of Education for prioritising policies aimed at improving teachers’ working conditions.

Oladimeji further appreciated the National President of the NUT, Audu Titus Amba, for his advocacy and commitment to improved welfare and better working conditions for teachers across the country.

He also charged teachers to remain exemplary figures to their pupils and students while continually seeking God’s guidance in carrying out their responsibilities.

In their separate sermons, Pastor (Mrs.) Margaret 'Dayo Akinrinde of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Oyo Province 2, Ibadan, and Comrade Haroon Lawal, a retired Permanent Secretary, described teachers as “shepherds of the generation,” likening their roles to that of shepherds who dedicate themselves to caring for their flock.

As part of activities marking the assembly, the union also distributed welfare materials to teachers across the 33 local government areas of the state.

The items, which included customised clothing materials and other support packages, were handed over to NUT leaders in the various councils for onward distribution to teachers.

Oladimeji said the gesture was aimed at appreciating the dedication and commitment of teachers to the education and development of students across the state.

The event featured Quran and Bible readings, prayer sessions for the leadership of the NUT at all levels, teachers nationwide, union staff, and the entire Nigerian workforce.
